Blackbirds, tits, chaffinches, warblers, robins, pigeons, cuckoos, bitterns. Then the nightingale. Every spring, I am fascinated by this loud polyphony that fills the air at dawn and dusk. It is like listening to a foreign yet beautiful language; I stand on the edge of someone else’s world, immersed in someone else’s love. It gives me joy in life and the will to live.

In Dialogue: with Plants, Animals, Insects, Fungi, Ancestors and Future Selves weaves together observations from a biodiverse garden, attempting to understand the world from the perspective of fellow creatures and to explore the relationships with nature accumulated in the female body through work.

The paintings, drawings and paper cuttings in the exhibition focus on the human connection with the earth, nature and fellow creatures through work, care, joy and art. Through daily interactions, humans have long been connected to plants and animals, forests and waters. By experiencing our mutual dependence, we can learn from other living beings. The greater the biodiversity, the more connections, vitality, beauty and love there are.

Estonian artist Jane Remm is interested in experiential and everyday entanglements with other species, and especially in women’s connections with local nature and their symbolic expression in traditional culture, patterns, food and folk songs—the fabric of life. The exhibition features paintings from the series From Another Perspective and Stumps, paper cuttings from Hunch, Care and the Thirst of Life, and drawings from Garden Diary.

Jane Remm is an artist and art educator, lecturer at the BFM at Tallinn University and doctoral student at Estonian Academy of Art. Jane Remm’s work focuses on the representation of experience of nature, co-creation and communication with different life forms. In her artistic practice, she seeks ways to act more locally, more sustainably and meaningfully in collaboration with humans and nonhumans. As a visual artist with a background in painting, a teacher, and a artistic researcher, she finds that art’s way of creating knowledge about the world is special, valuing manual work and collaboration as an opportunity to perceive oneself as part of nature.

Mustarastaat, tiaiset, peipot, kertut, punarinnat, kyyhkyt, käet, kaulushaikarat. Sitten satakieli. Joka kevät tämä äänekäs moniäänisyys, joka täyttää ilman aamunkoitteessa ja hämärän laskeutuessa, lumoa minut. Se on kuin kuuntelisi vierasta mutta kaunista kieltä; seison jonkun toisen maailman rajalla, jonkun toisen rakkauden keskellä. Se tuo minulle elämäniloa ja tahdon elää.

Vuoropuhelussa: kasvien, eläinten, hyönteisten, sienten, esiäitien ja tulevien minien kanssa -näyttely punoo yhteen havaintoja monimuotoisesta puutarhasta. Se pyrkii ymmärtämään maailmaa kanssakulkijoina elävien olentojen näkökulmasta sekä tutkimaan niitä suhteita luontoon, jotka ovat kerrostuneet naisen kehoon työn kautta.

Näyttelyn maalaukset, piirustukset ja paperileikkaukset tarkastelevat ihmisen yhteyttä maahan, luontoon ja muihin eläviin olentoihin työn, huolenpidon, ilon ja taiteen kautta. Arjen vuorovaikutuksessa ihmiset ovat kautta aikojen olleet yhteydessä kasveihin ja eläimiin, metsiin ja vesiin. Kokemalla keskinäisen riippuvuutemme voimme oppia muilta eläviltä olennoilta. Mitä monimuotoisempaa elämä on, sitä enemmän on yhteyksiä, elinvoimaa, kauneutta ja rakkautta.

Virolainen taiteilija Jane Remm on kiinnostunut kokemuksellisista ja jokapäiväisistä kietoutumisista muiden lajien kanssa sekä erityisesti naisten suhteesta paikalliseen luontoon ja sen symbolisista ilmenemismuodoista perinteisessä kulttuurissa, kuvioissa, ruoassa ja kansanlauluissa – elämän kudoksessa. Näyttelyssä on esillä maalauksia sarjoista Toisesta näkökulmasta (From Another Perspective) ja Kannot (Stumps), paperileikkauksia sarjasta Kumaruus, huolenpito ja elämänjano (Hunch, Care and the Thirst of Life) sekä piirustuksia sarjasta Puutarhapäiväkirja (Garden Diary).

Jane Remm on taiteilija, taidekasvattaja, Tallinnan yliopiston BFM lehtori sekä Viron taideakatemian tohtoriopiskelija. Hänen työnsä keskittyy luontokokemuksen, yhteisluomisen ja eri elämänmuotojen välisen vuorovaikutuksen kuvaamiseen.

Taiteellisessa työskentelyssään Remm etsii tapoja toimia paikallisemmin, kestävämmällä tavalla ja merkityksellisemmin yhteistyössä niin ihmisten kuin muidenkin elävien olentojen kanssa. Maalaustaiteeseen pohjautuvan taiteilijataustansa, opettajan työnsä ja taiteellisen tutkimuksensa kautta hän näkee taiteen erityisenä tapana tuottaa tietoa maailmasta. Hän pitää käsillä tekemistä ja yhteistyötä mahdollisuutena hahmottaa ihminen osana luontoa.
