Christelle Mas on ranskalainen taiteilija, joka asuu ja työskentelee Oulussa. Territories-valokuvasarja on kokoelma matkakuvia paikasta toiseen sekä siirtymiä ajasta toiseen. Sarja koostuu Oulussa, Hailuodossa ja Italian Materassa kuvatuista valokuvista.

Ihmisiä usein kiehtovia rajat ja niiden ylittäminen. Matkustaminen on demokratisoitunut lännessä ja matkustaminen on jotain, mitä jokaisen tulisi tehdä elämänsä aikana. Myös muuttovirrat lisääntyvät idästä länteen. Kuinka ihmisvirrat, ekologiset, pandemiat ja taloudelliset katastrofit piirtävät maiden alueita ja rajoja uudelleen. Vaikka rakentaisimme muureja, rajat ovat poistumassa. Rantaviiva on viimeinen raja, joka erottaa alueen aineellisuuden virtauksen dynamiikasta.
Maan ja meren välisten yhteyksien kehittämistä kehitetään yhä enemmän, esimerkiksi lentokentät rakennetaan yhä useammin merelle. Meri liikkuu ja alueet hajoavat. Ylittääkö ulkopuoli sisäpuolen? Nykyajan yhteiskunnat repeytyvät avoimuuden ja rajoitusten välillä, matkustaako vai ei.
Viimeinen raja on alati muuttuva. Kuinka horisontin voi ylittää?
Territories-valokuvasarja on matkakuvia paikasta toiseen ja siirtymiä ajasta toiseen, kaikkea siinä välissä.
”Yhdistän kaksi tai kolme kuvaa yhteen teokseen yhdistäen näin kaksi tai kolme hetkeä yhteen paikkaan ja näen niiden päällekkäisyyden. Territories-sarjassa hyödynnän pohjoisia maisemia, asuinkaupunkiani Oulua, joka sijaitsee Perämeren rannalla. Otin kuvia myös Hailuodosta, joka on Perämeren suurin saari. Hailuoto sijaitsee vastapäätä Oulun kaupunkia Pohjanlahdella. Sarjassa on myös valokuvia Materasta, Italiasta. Matera on kallioon kaiverrettu kaupunki, joka on yksi Italian vanhimmista kaupungeista. Se on peräisin paleoliittiselta- ja keskiajalta. Tutkin siellä kiviä luonnon elementtinä. Valokuvissani kivi on maan raaka-aine.”
Christelle Mas (s. 1984) on ranskalainen taiteilija, joka asuu ja työskentelee Oulussa. Mas työskentelee monimuotoisesti valokuvamateriaalin kanssa käyttäen sitä esimerkiksi kollaaseissa ja installaatioissa. Hän on tutkinut valokuvausta mediana ja teknologiana sekä totuuden käsitettä suhteessa valokuvaan. Töidensä kautta hän paljastaa näkymätöntä ja korostaa näkyvyyden suhteellisuutta. Hän luo usein kiehtovia maailmoja, joissa tiede ja mytologia sekä luonnollinen ja keinotekoinen kohtaavat. Mas on suorittanut filosofian kandidaatin ja taiteen maisterin tutkinnot Sorbonnen yliopistossa Pariisissa. Hänen töitään on ollut esillä useissa yksityis- ja yhteisnäyttelyissä Suomessa ja ulkomailla. Hänen teoksiaan yksityisten kokoelmien ohella myös Oulun ja Kemin taidemuseoiden kokoelmissa. Mas on Suomen Biotaiteen seuran jäsen ja valokuvataiteilijoiden liiton jäsen. Hän on toiminut vuodesta 2012 valokuvauksen opettajana Oulussa.

People are often fascinated by borders and crossing them. Travelling is democratized in the West and it is something that everyone should do during their life. Migration flows are also increasing from east to west. How human flows, ecological, pandemic and economic disasters redraw territories and borders. Even if we build walls, the borders are in the process of obsolescence, the coastline is the last limit which separates the materiality of the territory from the dynamics of the flow.
The development of interconnections between land and sea are increasingly developed, for example with airports more and more often built on the sea. The sea moves and territories disintegrate. Does the outside prevail over the inside? Contemporary societies are torn between openness and confinement, travel or not travel.
The last frontier is protean. How to cross the horizon?
Territories photograph series is at the same time travel images from place to place and transitions from time to time, in between.
”I bring together two or three images on a single print and thus associating two or three moments on one place and seeing how this is superimposing. In the Territories series, I take advantage of northern landscapes, Oulu, the city where I live. Oulu is situated by the Gulf of Bothnia next to the sea. I also took photographs from Hailuoto, which is the largest island in the Bothnian Bay. Hailuoto lies opposite the city of Oulu in the Gulf of Bothnia. In the series, there are also photographs from Matera, Italy. Matera is a city carved into solid rock. It is one of the oldest cities in Italy, it dates back to the Paleolithic and Middle Ages. I explored the rocks as a natural element. In my photographs stone is the raw material of the land.”
Christelle Mas (b. 1984) is a French artist living in Oulu. She has made Finland her home. Her medium is photography mixed with drawings and installations. She has researched the medium of photography, experimented with the technology of science, and thus tested the limits of the medium itself playing with the concept of truth in the photographic image.
She likes to reveal the invisible and highlights the relative nature of what is visible. She often creates encaptivating worlds in which science and mythology, natural and artificial are intertwined. Mas has a Master of Arts degree from the University of Sorbonne in Paris, where she also earned a BA in the philosophy of art. She has displayed her work in several solo and joint exhibitions both in Finland and internationally. Works by Christelle Mas are included in the collections of Oulu Art Museum and Kemi Art Museum, and in private collections. Mas is a member of the Bioart Society and the Association of Photographic Artists in Finland.
